I was recently able to experience a high energy, fast paced hair show on stage in front of hundreds of people! The heart pumping exhilaration before you step on stage is powerful. You can use that power to energize you or it will destroy you. A shot of confidence and attention can be addicting. Luckily for me that evening, it was an upper. I've always been addicted to the fast lane and I felt like I was back there for the first time in awhile.
Nerves do either two things, it makes you ramble so you can't shut yourself up or it completely disrupts your frontal lobe so you can't remember your name. Mine does the latter. So I took a different approach this time. I stopped worrying about me, what I was thinking, what other people were thinking, or that I would mess up. Instead, I heard that if you want the audience to love you, then love the audience first. So I gave instead, gave them love, gave them inspiration, gave credit for the people who got me to where I am, and gave information people could use. And it worked! It took the nerves away and allowed me to do what I do best, cut some damn hair!
So my encouragement to you - do something uncomfortable! Whether that's on stage, going somewhere alone, addressing something you've avoided, or meeting new people, try something new to push yourself. It makes you stronger and gives you that shot of confidence! ~ao
